The ICL is a thin, foldable lens implanted behind the iris and in front of the eye's natural lens through a very small incision, correcting vision without removing any corneal tissue. It suits high prescriptions that laser cannot correct safely, thin corneas and some dry-eye cases. The lens is invisible and cannot be felt, and can be removed or exchanged in the future if ever needed.
Signs & who it is for
- High short-sight or significant astigmatism beyond safe laser limits
- A thin or irregular cornea that rules out LASIK
- Dry eye not suited to surface laser
- Age 21 or older with a stable prescription
- A preference for a reversible solution
When is it recommended?
When tests show that laser is unsafe or insufficient for your eye, the internal space of the eye (anterior chamber depth) is enough to accommodate the lens, and the corneal endothelial cell count is healthy. These measurements are taken in clinic before any decision.
Options & techniques
- Precise sizing of the lens for your eye (biometry and anterior-segment imaging)
- Implantation in each eye in a short session under anaesthetic drops
- Vision improves within hours to days
- Regular follow-up of eye pressure and corneal cells
Frequently asked questions
Will I feel the lens inside my eye?
No. The lens sits behind the iris, cannot be seen or felt, and works together with your natural lens.
Is ICL better than LASIK?
Neither better nor worse; each has its candidates. Laser suits moderate prescriptions and a healthy, thick cornea; ICL suits high prescriptions and thin corneas. The examination decides.
