Corneal Cross-linking

Strengthening corneal fibres with riboflavin and UV light to stop keratoconus progressing.

Cross-linking strengthens the bonds between the cornea's collagen fibres using riboflavin (vitamin B2) drops and precisely calibrated ultraviolet light, making the cornea stiffer and halting the progression of keratoconus. The goal is to stop deterioration and preserve current vision — not to improve vision as such, although some patients notice a modest improvement over time.

Signs & who it is for

  • Keratoconus confirmed by imaging with evidence of progression
  • Younger patients (teens and young adults), in whom progression is faster
  • Corneal thickness sufficient for safe treatment
  • Corneal thinning after refractive surgery (rare)

When is it recommended?

When progression is documented between two consecutive scans, or in young patients even before clear progression, because deterioration is fast at their age. The earlier the cross-linking, the better the vision preserved.

Options & techniques

  • Performed in clinic or theatre under anaesthetic drops, about an hour
  • A protective contact lens for a few days with drops
  • Discomfort and light sensitivity in the first days, then improving
  • Follow-up topography to confirm stability
  • Can be combined with ring implantation to improve vision

Frequently asked questions

Will my vision improve after cross-linking?

The primary goal is to stop deterioration. Some patients notice a small improvement; real visual improvement comes from rings or specialty lenses once the cornea is stable.
